Beginners Guide To Having a Key Plan For Your Affiliate Marketing Business

In any business, having a key plan is essential to one’s success.  There’s an age old saying that applies even to Affiliate Marketing.  “Don’t have a plan, plan to fail”.  Where do you want to be in 3 to 5 years?  If you wake up in a year or two and haven’t gotten anywhere, you wouldn’t like that would you? 

The definition for “key plan” as found on Wordnik.com is as follows:

“A diagrammatic or abridged plan giving simply the emplacement of the chief points of interest.  It may be a key or index to more elaborate plans.”

You wouldn’t take a trip with your car if you didn’t already know where you are going would you?  Having a map is like having a plan.  It’s imperative to have some idea where you are going.  The same is true in business.

The importance of a business plan

I’ve seen some research that points out that those who developed and followed a business plan were more likely to grow their business, more likely to secure a loan or investment capital, and their chances were double or 2 times more likely to grow their business by following a business plan.  A well thought out business plan can do you wonders down the road. 

And I know you’re probably asking, “wait, this is just affiliate marketing, why is a plan so important?”  Affiliate Marketing is a business and the more prepared one is, the better your progress will be.  This is where the “R” word comes in.  Do plenty of “Research” in the beginning and construct your business plan.  If you do this, then you’ll be farther down the road to success than those who just jump on board without a plan. 

It can get so exciting in the beginning of starting an affiliate marketing business that thoughts of developing a business plan may not even enter one’s mind.  So, don’t let emotion turn into quick sand.

So what should you do?

Here are some steps to follow for those venturing into Affiliate Marketing:

  1.  Do plenty of “Research”.  Start by picking the niche you want to work in and know your product or program inside and out.  There is no such thing as knowing too much information.
  2. Develop a Mission Statement.  What is your company all about and the purpose it serves.  This may not seem important, but it does send a message. 
  3. Products and/or Programs you offer.  You’ve done your research by this time and you should be prepared to know what you are going to offer.
  4. What are your Goals?  This is where you start planning for your future.  Where do you plan to take your business in the future?  Don’t set a goal so high that it’s unattainable.  Start out with some easily attainable goals first then work your way up.
  5. Who are you going to serve?  Think about the age ranges, their occupations, how can you help them and so fourth.
  6. Know your competitors and their strategies and prices.  You should have found this info during your research.  By knowing what they are doing, you can stand out in front of them.
  7. Doing a Blog?  Know your audience and how you can help them.  See also our “Ultimate Guide To Building an Audience”  Don’t be afraid to offer a survey to your audience to get an idea of what they are looking for.  There is a neat website called Surveymonkey.com that you can build a survey for free on.

Would you build your house without first having plans drawn up to know how your new house would be laid out?  I would hope your answer would be No otherwise you could be in for some trouble during the build.  Did you take notice to how the previous sentence ended?  “…during the build” – You should have a plan for your business “during the build” of your business and beyond.  When you start your business, you are in a “build” phase working towards your future.  This is where that saying comes in “Don’t have a plan, plan to fail”. 

Did you know that a lot of affiliate marketing programs offer free training?  It’s because they want you to succeed.  If you do well, they do well.  The better prepared you are, the better your future will be.  You have to be willing to roll up your sleeves and do the work.  It’s not that some people are better at this than you.  It’s that they know things that you don’t.  How hard do you want this?   How hard are you willing to do the work?  You are your greatest tool in your tool box.  The sharper you are, the more you’ll slice through your competition.
