7 Tips To Avoiding These Blog Startup Mistakes

In the beginning, it can be very exciting and somewhat overwhelming for new bloggers putting together a new blog / website.  Many often overlook a lot of what is needed to run a successful blog.  The beginning of a blog is actually a very important time for one’s blogging journey.  It’s a time where you are establishing an internet presence and getting an identity online.  It’s also a time where some important items can be overlooked:

Antivirus – While this has nothing to do with your blog, it does have a lot to do with your desktop or laptop computer.  Many often overlook this item.  If your system gets effected, this could diminish or stop your efforts.  If you are in need of an Antivirus software, I highly recommend AVG Free antivirus.  You have a choice of the FREE version or the Premium version.  I’ve used this before and it is quite a good antivirus software to use.

I started with Antivirus, as you would be surprised as to how often this one item is skipped over.  While it has nothing to do with your website, if you can’t use your system, then you are sunk.  If you don’t know anything about this subject, I’d advise you to look into this now.

web hosting

Avoid Free Hosting Sites.

Free hosting sites sound good at first, but there are some hidden realities with these types of sites.  Sites like these include Wix and Weebly to name a few.  You’ve probably seen these sites before as they have very strong marketing campaigns.  It is very attractive and fair that sites like these offer free plans.  But, on the other hand, at some point, you’ll run the risk of surpassing your site’s resources and need more capabilities as they do have their own limitations.  Nowadays it’s getting more affordable to host your own site.  Check out:  Looking For Prime Real Estate To Host Your New Website ?

Platforms and Themes.

It does pay to be picky when it comes to choosing the right platform and theme for your blog.  The problem with not going with WordPress in the beginning is that you may end up being forced to do so later.  Some argue that there are better platforms out there.  But regardless of capabilities, WordPress has a wide range of free and premium plugins and themes that are available in the wordpress repository.  Changing platforms is not an easy task to undertake.  This is one task better left on the way side by avoiding it to begin with.  Having the wrong theme can also cost you in areas such as how slow the site loads.  If you are interested in finding a theme, check out Themeco, I did a review on this company and it’s worth your time.

Did YOU Research?

If your answer is anything but a yes, then you are short changing your readers and you as well.  When you research the topics you are writing about, your readers aren’t the only one’s learning.  If you want your blog to be a blog of quality, then you need to research.  Your research doesn’t end with just keyword research.  Sometimes when you research, you can find ways to create more articles just from this one post you are working on now.

Proper domain names

Domain Names Matter.

It’s far more important than you think when it comes to choosing a domain name.  Domain names fall into the “branding category”.  You should avoid complicated domain names.  If you are concerned with branding, go short and catchy.  The most common length for a domain name is 12 to 13 characters.  Now consider Timabeck.com, personalized as it is, if you plan on selling your business someday, then personal branding isn’t the way to go.

Uninterested Topics.

It may seem easy to come up with just about anything to write about in your niche.  But, while that maybe the case, you’d run the risk of ending up with a bored audience.  The General Rule of blogging is to give them what they want.  How do you do that?  Simple, keyword research will get you there.  By using Google Trends as well as a keyword research tool, you can find what your readers want.  Keyword research is important, as keywords will lead to organic traffic to your website.  Basically, you’d begin your article or topic research with searching for keywords first.  As your whole post is wrote around the keywords you will be using.

Are you being social?

One of the first things you should have done is establish an online presence right away.  Sharing your content on social media and daily promotions are key to driving traffic to your blog.  It’s great that your posts are being added to your blog often and you’re making use of keyword research, but to increase your chances of traffic, you should be auto posting your content to social media as well. Promoting what you are offering is key too.  The more you have a dialog with your social media, the more traffic you’ll get.  I recommend that you get on board with Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, Pinterest & Tumblr.  The post below will expose the frequency of how often to promote to these social media sites.
